ER Follow-up

Follow-up visit after an emergency room visit.

Typical visit length: 20–40 minutes

After your visit

What to expect once you leave the office — and what to do to keep things on track.

Consider...

  1. 1

    Scheduling specialist referrals

Many ER follow-ups end with a referral. Schedule promptly — wait times can be long.

  2. 2

    Checking medication reconciliation

Make sure your home medications and new ER prescriptions don’t conflict.

  3. 3

    Getting the ER records

Request a copy for your personal file in case you need it later.

  4. 4

    Planning ahead

If there’s a chance of recurrence, know which urgent care or ER to go to next time.

When to call your provider or seek care

  • Return of the symptoms that originally sent you to the ER
  • New or worsening pain, swelling, or shortness of breath
  • Medication reaction (rash, swelling, breathing trouble)
  • Fever or signs of infection

In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
